BASIC FEATURES OF GRAMEEN KALYAN

1) Beginning of a health program:

The health program was started in 1993 as a pilot project of GB. The primary object is to improve the well being of poor women and their families by making access to health care services easy for them. Grameen Kalyan is planning to have more advanced technological assets for the improvement of the health program. Beginning of a health program is intended to provide primary heath care services to Grameen Bank (GB) members as well as non GB members living within its operational area at a cost that the poor can afford. Priority is given on preventive and promotional health services with special emphasis on family planning, reproductive health, maternal and child health.

2) Goal and objectives of health program:

The goal of the health program is firstly to plan, organize, provide and evaluate the components of primary health care services to promote health, prevent illness and premature death. Secondly it aims to provide diagnostic as well as medical services including referral service for secondary health care amongst the members.

3) Main objectives of health program:

  • To deliver quality health care services.
  • To develop and administer health insurance scheme, with the active participation of the community, at a cost that the community can afford.
  • To enable the program to sustain itself in the long run

4) Services provided

A Health centre is usually attached to a Grameen Bank branch, which covers an area with a radius of eight kilometers approximately and acts as an insurer and provides health service.

5) Following health services under Primary Health Care(PHC) are provided at the centre:

  • Static & Satellite Clinic Outdoor Service
  • Domiciliary Community Health Service
  • Emergency Service And Referral Service
  • Laboratory Service
  • Medicine Supply   

6) Progress

Since 1998 the health program began to operate on a more professional way. To improve the activities several steps have been taken. With the cooperation and enthusiasm of all employees a number of improvements have made which reflected in the following activities:

            d) Medicine supplies
            e) School Health Program
            f) Training and Human Resource Development and
            g) Workshops
